The US-based group, the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), has urged President Bola Tinubu to sack the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, describing the move as a necessary step to end the ongoing Rivers State political crisis.

According to the group, the ongoing tension in Rivers State will not ease until firm action is taken against the former governor.

NADECO also called on President Tinubu to declare a six-month state of emergency in some parts of Northern Nigeria affected by banditry and insurgency. The group warned that there would be no credible election in those areas where terrorists currently control communities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The calls by NADECO for the sacking of Wike were made by its United States president and Chief Executive Officer, Lloyd Ukwu, while speaking in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, January 7. He alleged that Wike’s actions were central to the Rivers State political crisis and insisted that peace would remain difficult to achieve unless the minister is sanctioned.

He maintained that removing Wike would clearly show that the president does not support what he described as an overbearing political influence in Rivers State.

Ukwu said, “The main problem in Rivers State today, as far as this crisis is concerned, is the Minister of the FCT. Rivers people know where the problem lies. The president must call him to order. Wike is his employee.”

He further warned that the move to impeach the Rivers governor during the absence of the president from the country showed the urgency of taking decisive steps. Ukwu added that President Tinubu would be held responsible should the state slip into deeper political instability.

NaijaEyes reports that the Rivers State political crisis took another turn on Thursday, January 8, 2026, when members of the State House of Assembly began impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. The lawmakers accused both officials of gross misconduct, including alleged breaches of constitutional duties and financial irregularities.

During the plenary presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, read out the notice of allegations against Governor Fubara. He stated that the charges were brought under Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution.

This development is coming amid renewed tension between Governor Fubara and the immediate past governor of Rivers State, now FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. The duo have continued to exchange words since the Christmas holiday, further fueling the Rivers State political crisis.
