According to a statement from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano State Sector Command, the crash occurred around 8:33 a.m. and involved a commercial DAF trailer with registration number KTG 467 YG.

The statement, signed by CRC Abdullahi Labaran, Public Relations Officer of FRSC Kano, disclosed that a distress call was received at 8:35 a.m., and the FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene within five minutes, at 8:40 a.m., to begin emergency response efforts.

“A total of 105 persons were involved in the crash. Unfortunately, seven persons lost their lives, while 70 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, comprising 55 males and 15 females,” the statement said.

Preliminary investigations by the Corps attributed the crash to over-speeding and loss of control, noting that the situation was worsened by the illegal practice of conveying passengers alongside goods.

“The suspected cause of the crash was over-speeding and loss of control, compounded by the dangerous practice of mixing goods with passengers. The crash was classified as a single-vehicle fatal crash,” the FRSC stated.

The injured victims were taken to four hospitals across Kano metropolis and surrounding areas. 24 victims were evacuated to Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital, another 24 to Gezawa General Hospital, 20 to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, and seven to Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital in Nasarawa.

In response to the incident, the FRSC expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.

“The Corps strongly warns motorists, especially commercial drivers, against over-speeding, reckless driving, and the illegal transport of passengers in goods vehicles, as these unsafe practices continue to cause preventable loss of life,” the statement emphasized.

The FRSC also urged the public to remain vigilant, follow traffic regulations, and prioritize safety to protect both lives and property.
