A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) high court has ordered the arrest of Kabiru Turaki, a factional national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for failing to appear before the court in a case filed by the inspector-general of police (IGP).

The trial judge, U.P. Kekemeke, ruled on Thursday that Turaki, a former minister, had no excuse for not showing up in court.

In October 2022, the IGP filed a one-court case against Turaki for allegedly giving the police incorrect information.

PREVIOUS COURT PROCEEDINGS

On January 28, the former minister was scheduled to be arraigned in court but the case was stalled because he was absent.

The prosecution informed the court during the proceedings that the defendant was expected to be in court because the court had already summoned him.

A bench warrant against Turaki had been requested by the prosecutor.

In response, the defence attorney stated that his client was not present in court because a letter requesting a transfer of the case to a different judge had been sent to the chief judge of the FCT High Court.

The defense counsel said a petition expressing doubt on confidence in the court has been submitted to the chief judge.

The trial judge, K.N. Ogbonnaya, stated that unless the chief judge issues an order, submitting a petition to the chief judge cannot halt the progression of a criminal case.

The case was later adjourned to March 5.
