Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to defend the country’s democracy, warning against any drift toward a one-party system.

In a post on his official X account on Wednesday, Peter Obi, now a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stated that members of his party and other pro-democracy advocates remain united in resisting attempts to weaken Nigeria’s multi-party framework.

He stressed the importance of protecting the nation’s democratic system and urged citizens who value unity, peace, and national security to take a firm stand.

Peter Obi further warned that any efforts to undermine political plurality would pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic development and stability.

Part of his statement read: “We, members and leaders of the ADC, alongside other well-meaning Nigerians and lovers of democracy, insist that our democracy must not be undermined.

“We reject any move towards a one-party system and call on all Nigerians who believe in unity, peace, and security to join us in defending our democracy.”
