President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday said the high rate of terrorist attacks across the country is a “gang up” to distract President Bola Tinubu’s reforms.

Akpabio made the claims during his goodwill message at the official inauguration of the Nigeria Revenue Service Headquarters, Abuja.

He said, “Believe me, Mr President, two weeks after you win the elections (2027), the bomb blasts will stop. People are sponsoring it to distract you from your work.

His remarks comes a day after Tinubu met behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa in Abuja with Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Defence Staff, and a French general.

“You’re doing so well despite the gang-up on your administration.”

The engagement on Monday was part of increased cooperation on Nigeria’s security situation, according to sources close to the President who talked to our correspondent on condition of anonymity.

The meeting, also happens to be Tinubu’s first official engagement since his return from Bayelsa on Friday.

Akpabio’s remarks comes amid Nigeria’s security situation, which includes a contentious airstrike on Saturday that claimed the lives of over 100 civilians and a new US advisory allowing non-emergency embassy employees to leave Abuja voluntarily.

Additionally, Akpabio defended Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, against accusations of partisan prejudice associated with a contentious social media post.

Akpabio further insisted that the statement attributed to him was impartial, rejecting allegations that a resurfaced tweet implied political alignment by the INEC chairman.

He, however, stressed that public office holders must remain impartial once entrusted with national responsibilities.
