Workers Begin Three-Day Warning Strike Over Unresolved Demands

Public sector workers operating under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) have officially initiated a three-day warning strike spanning October 2 to October 4, 2026, citing worsening economic and psychological hardship impacting workers and their families.

The nationwide industrial action commenced at midnight on Friday, October 2, and is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, October 4.

In a directive signed by National Secretary Gbenga Olowoyo on October 1, 2026, the council instructed national and state chapter leaders to mobilize workers and ensure comprehensive compliance across all government offices.

The council stated, “Consequent upon the above, the strike shall start with effect from midnight on Friday, 2nd October, 2026 to Sunday October 4th, 2026.”

According to the circular, the action was finalized after President Bola Tinubu failed to respond to the council’s letter dated September 21, 2026, detailing their demands.

It stated, “In the same vein, all public servants in the services of federal, state and local governments are to join the warning strike because an injury to one is an injury to all, most especially, all workers, their dependants, vulnerable and hapless Nigerians are groaning terribly under the present economic hardship.”

The directive called on all public service workers across federal, state, and local government tiers to join the walkout, underscoring that the action aims to highlight the severe economic challenges facing workers across the country.

Backstory…

On September 30, the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), representing Nigerian public sector workers, disclosed its intention to launch a three-day warning strike starting October 2, 2026, if the Federal Government fails to address its demands regarding fuel costs, wage awards, and minimum wage negotiations.

The JNPSNC stated that it has mobilized public service employees nationwide to execute the warning strike should the Federal Government fail to address the grievances detailed in its letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
