The Accord Party has distanced itself from a recent opposition meeting held in Ibadan, where some political groups reportedly agreed to back a single presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

In a statement issued by its National Secretary, Mukhtar Abdallah, the party said it neither attended nor authorized the use of its name and logo at the gathering, describing the development as political impersonation rather than a mere mistake.

The Ibadan meeting was said to involve members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and other opposition groups, who later announced plans to unite behind one candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu of the APC in 2027.

However, the Accord Party, led by Professor Chris Imumolen, insisted it is not part of any such coalition and did not grant approval for its identity to be used.

“This is not an oversight; it is a misrepresentation,” the party stated, adding that it cannot be compelled into alliances it did not consent to.

It also raised concerns about the credibility of the coalition, noting that using the name of a non-participating party undermines its legitimacy.

The accord party emphasized that its priority remains the 2027 general elections, where it intends to field its own presidential candidate.

“The Accord Party remains focused on the 2027 general elections, not as a footnote in a hastily formed coalition,” the statement added.

Imumolen has given the organisers of the meeting 48 hours to explain the unauthorized use of the party’s name, warning that failure to do so could lead to legal action.

The party reaffirmed its readiness to protect its identity and independence, stressing that it will not allow its platform to be used for political advantage without consent.
