Shettima gave the charge on Sunday, May 3, 2026, during the official flag-off of the Hajj airlift at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, which marked the beginning of this year’s pilgrimage operations. About 500 pilgrims from Kogi State were among the first batch to depart, while over 50,000 Nigerians are expected to participate in the exercise.

Addressing the gathering, the Vice President said the pilgrimage goes beyond spiritual fulfilment, describing it as a national responsibility that requires pilgrims to act as ambassadors of Nigeria.

Shettima urged them to exhibit values such as discipline, humility, patience, and integrity, while strictly adhering to the laws of Saudi Arabia.

Shettima emphasized that the Hajj operation is a shared responsibility between the government and the pilgrims, noting that while authorities are committed to ensuring safety and smooth coordination, participants must also uphold national values throughout the journey.

He also reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Nigerians both within and outside the country.

Other officials present at the event echoed similar concerns, focusing on safety, orderliness, and effective coordination during the pilgrimage.

Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, encouraged pilgrims to use the opportunity to pray for peace and national development, while Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, through a representative, assured that necessary arrangements had been made to ensure smooth flight operations.

The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Ismail Abba Yusuf, also reiterated the commission’s commitment to transparency and a seamless pilgrimage experience.

The statement was released via the official page of Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President.
