The leadership crisis in the Kano State chapter of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has been resolved, with Hon. Husaini Isah Mai Riga reaffirmed as the party’s substantive state chairman.

The dispute reportedly began following the defection of former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, into the party, a development that triggered internal tensions among members in Kano.

While some factions challenged Mai Riga’s leadership, he maintained that his mandate remained valid, insisting he would not relinquish his position outside the party’s established constitutional procedures.

The disagreement eventually prompted the intervention of the party’s national leadership, which convened a special meeting on Tuesday under the leadership of Seriake Dickson.

The meeting brought together Kwankwaso, the NDC Northwest Vice Chairman Muhammad Sabo Bakin Zuwo, and other senior party officials.

After extensive deliberations, the leadership crisis was resolved, and Mai Riga’s position as Kano State chairman was upheld.

Party insiders disclosed that Kwankwaso accepted the outcome, with alternative leadership responsibilities reportedly assigned to him as part of the reconciliation arrangement.

Reacting to the resolution, Mai Riga expressed appreciation to the party leadership and the people of Kano for their support during the period of tension.

“I sincerely appreciate the support of our leaders and the people of Kano at this critical time,” he said, adding, “I also extend apologies to anyone I may have offended in recent days.”

He further revealed that a significant portion of the state leadership structure had been allocated to Kwankwaso as part of the agreement, while he retained his position as chairman.

The resolution is widely seen as a move by the party to restore unity and strengthen internal cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
