Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, may formally announce his candidature for president on Thursday at a gathering scheduled for the historic Mapo Hall in the state’s Ibadan South-East Local Government Area.
The organisers are using the “Unity Mega Rally Ibadan 2026” to announce a political alliance between the Peoples Democratic Party and the Allied Peoples Movement in the state, while also formally launching Makinde’s anticipated 2027 presidential campaign.
Makinde is also expected to announce his own bid and unveil candidates for state and national elective positions on the APM platform.
Recall that there was a wave of resignations by political officeholders in the state, particularly those seeking positions in the 2027 elections, from the PDP to the APM.
Meanwhile, the APM is expected to unveil former State Commissioner for Finance Bimbo Adekanmbi as its governorship candidate, along with senatorial candidates Stanley Olajide, Olufemi Ajadi, and Shina Peller.
The party is also expected to unveil its candidates for the House of Representatives and House of Assembly.
Before the declaration rally, leaders of the APM and the Tanimu Turaki faction of the PDP are expected to sign an agreement outlining the terms of their partnership.
A credible PDP source wo spoke to The Punch said, “We will sign forms of alliance with APM, involving its national chairman and our own side, led by Taminu Turaki.
“Governor Seyi Makinde will declare his presidential bid on the platform of the APM.”
BACKSTORY…
This comes following reports that several prominent loyalists of the Oyo State governor officially resigned from the party in separate announcements made on Thursday.
Among those who reportedly dumped the party are former governorship aspirant Ambassador Olufemi Oguntoyinbo; Governor Makinde’s Special Adviser on Security, Mr. Fatai Owoseni; and Chairman of Oluyole Local Government, Engineer Akeem Olatunji.
