The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has criticised the federal government for what it described as the “haphazard” implementation of the renegotiated Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) agreement.

In an interview with TheCable on Thursday, ASUU President Chris Piwuna stated that the unpaid EAA has now extended to 18 months.

On January 14, the federal government and ASUU signed a renegotiated deal to address the ongoing strikes in Nigeria’s public tertiary institutions following nearly 16 years of implementation deadlock.

The new agreement was reached in December 2025 after extensive negotiations between ASUU leadership and a federal government committee.

However, there have been documented delays in the payment of lecturers’ salaries at federal universities since the beginning of February.

In recent days, this has caused considerable unrest within ASUU state chapters, with branches threatening to take industrial action against the government if the union’s renegotiated agreements are not completely implemented.

The president of ASUU stated that academics are tired of the federal ministry of education’s alleged carelessness in carrying out important provisions of the inked agreement, especially the EAA.

He said, “Our members across the branches feel the pinch, so their responses are expected.”

“The federal ministry of education has gone to sleep. We intend to wake them up. When the drums start beating, be sure of what will follow.”

Piwuna also said the government cannot sign an agreement and then force vice-chancellors to fund it.

“Our promotion arrears have been waiting for the approval of the minister of finance. Now they say the new minister has to settle down. We are tired of your tactics. We are fed up,” the ASUU president maintained.
