Veteran journalist and former presidential candidate, Dele Momodu, has clarified that he did not intend to insult former Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, amid ongoing political tensions within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Dele Momodu made the clarification in response to comments he described as disparaging remarks made by Amaechi against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Amaechi, in a recent interview with Trust TV, had criticised Atiku over his position on zoning, a statement that has continued to generate reactions within political circles.

Both Amaechi and Atiku are currently seeking the ADC presidential ticket ahead of future elections, with reports suggesting that some influential party stakeholders are pushing for Amaechi to step down in favour of Atiku — a suggestion he has firmly rejected.

In the interview, Amaechi expressed confidence in securing the party’s nomination, dismissing any possibility of a consensus arrangement.

Reacting to the exchange during an appearance on Channels Television, Dele Momodu advised the former minister to exercise restraint, urging him to manage his temperament in public discourse.

Dele Momodu said: “Mr. Amaechi, in the name of the Almighty God, should please cool his temper. A potential presidential candidate and possible president of Nigeria must watch his temper and temperament and should not attack Atiku.”

Dele Momodu’s comments were, however, interpreted by some in Amaechi’s camp as offensive, prompting the veteran journalist to clarify his position.

Taking to his X handle and sharing photos of himself with Amaechi, Momodu wrote:

“My dear friend and brother, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, I did not abuse you. I only pleaded with you not to insult Atiku, a perfect gentleman who, despite the age gap, continues to respect all of us. You know I’m as frank as you are and I only spoke candidly the way true friends should speak. Love and respect always…”
