A public affairs analyst, Mahmud Jega, has stated that Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, has made history as the first All Progressives Congress (APC) governor to be denied a bid for re-election.

Jega made the comment on Friday night during a live interview on Arise Television, where he discussed the governor’s reported withdrawal from the APC governorship primary on the eve of the exercise.

Reports indicate that while some Nigerians praised the development, others criticized it, describing the governor as weak.

Offering his perspective, Jega said the situation was not unexpected given political developments in Rivers State over the past three years.

He noted, “What happened in Rivers couldn’t have been surprising to anyone who has been following events in the last three years.”

According to him, Fubara has set a precedent as the first APC governor, including those who defected from other parties, to be denied a re-election opportunity.

He further suggested that the development reflects the outcome of a political peace arrangement brokered by President Bola Tinubu between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Jega added that the terms of the arrangement appeared to include preventing impeachment attempts against Fubara on one hand, while also restricting his bid for a second term in 2027 on the other.
