Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has emerged  winner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election.

The returning officer of the ADC presidential primary election, Tunde Ogbeha made the announcement late on Wednesday night after collation.

Following the announcement, Abubakar received the party’s flag as the ADC flag bearer.

After he received the ADC flag as the party’s standard-bearer for the 2027 elections, Abubakar urged Hayatu-Deen and Amaechi to join forces with him in the effort to rescue Nigeria’s democracy.

He further added that there is no winner and no vanquished in the contest.

Also speaking on his part, David Mark, the factional ADC national chairman, said the contest was “free, fair, credible and worthy of democratic standards”.

He claimed that “intense pressure to tilt the direction” of the presidential primary was applied to him.
Meanwhile, controversy trailed the ADC presidential primary, as Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen rejected the results over alleged irregularities and voter disenfranchisement.

I will personally visit Amaechi, Hayatu-Deen to seek support

In another development, Abubakar has said that he would personally visit ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen to seek their support in next year’s general elections.

He made the remark shortly after party officials declared him the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) late Wednesday.

BACKSTORY…

Recall that ADC conducted a nationwide direct primary on Monday to select its choice candidate for the 2027 presidential election, with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, former managing director of the defunct FSB International Bank, and Rotimi Amaechi as the main contenders.

Meanwhile, the figures as of Wednesday showed that Hayatu-Deen received 156,075 votes, Amaechi polled 248,455, and Atiku secured 1,390,276 votes with Abubakar leading in 22 states.

However, former minister of transport, Rotimi Amaechi has rejected the ADC presidential primary result, citing irregularities.

In a statement on his official X handle, he wrote, “Following reports of widespread voter disenfranchisement in most parts of the country during the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Primaries yesterday, I unequivocally reject the concocted results being announced“.
