BREAKING: Jonathan declared PDP faction’s presidential candidate in absentia

The Kabiru Turaki led faction of the PDP has declared former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Factional party members ratified Jonathan’s candidacy on Saturday during a special national convention at the party’s office in Area 10, Garki District, Abuja.

Despite Jonathan’s absence from the event, Fred Agbedi, a member of the Bayelsa State House of Representatives, accepted his certificate of return on his behalf.

Recall that the faction had initially planned to hold its convention at the A-Class Park and Event Centre.

However, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) directed owners of hotels and event centres to only deal with the leadership of political parties recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

BACKSTORY…

Police officers earlier sealed off roads leading to the venue of a special PDP convention organised by a faction of the party to ratify former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate.

Officers stationed at the barricade told reporters that the event had been cancelled. Shortly afterward, party officials disclosed that they had moved the special convention to another location in Area 10.

No Move to Adopt Jonathan for 2027 — PDP Faction

This development comes after another faction of the party debunked widespread reports alleging that it plans to hold a convention to confirm former President Jonathan as its 2027 presidential candidate.

PDP National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Mohammed said in a Friday statement that security agencies should investigate the source of the reports and prosecute those behind what the party described as an attempt to create political tension and disrepute within the polity.Politics
