June 12: Federal Government Announces Schedule of Events for 2027 Democracy Day Celebration

The Federal Government has announced the schedule of events for the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, set for June 12.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said the Democracy Day occasion is a time to reflect on the sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for the restoration of democratic governance.

He added that Democracy Day also serves to honour the legacy of the June 12, 1993 struggle and the late MKO Abiola.

According to him, the celebration will also highlight government efforts in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national development despite current economic challenges.

The approved programme of activities for the 27th Democracy Day includes a World Press Conference on June 4, 2026, followed by Special Juma’at Prayers on June 5.

A Special Inter-denominational Church Service will hold on June 7, while a Democracy Day Public Lecture is scheduled for June 9.

Youth and women-focused programmes will take place on June 10, leading up to a Presidential Broadcast and a Democracy Day Gala Night on June 12, 2026.
