Ogun receives 345 returning Hajj pilgrims as flight arrives at Gateway International Airport

The first batch of 345 Ogun State pilgrims who travelled to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the 2026 Hajj have safely returned to Nigeria after completing the spiritual exercise in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

The pilgrims, made up of 151 men and 194 women, arrived directly from Saudi Arabia at the Gateway International Airport, Ilisan-Iperu Remo Ogun State, aboard a Flynas A330 aircraft at about 8:41 p.m. on Thursday.

Their return marks a major milestone for the airport, which successfully handled a direct international flight from Saudi Arabia following the completion of this year’s Hajj operations.

The returning pilgrims were received by top government officials, including representatives of the Ogun State Government led by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, alongside the Head of Service, Mr. Olarenwaju Iskeel Saka.

Speaking at a reception held at the airport, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, represented by the SSG, described the smooth conduct of the 2026 Hajj operations as a significant achievement for the state.

“I feel very happy and elated because many people thought this day would not be possible, but we thank God Almighty for making it a reality.

“The departure was very smooth, the return has been smooth, and the handling of passengers has gone very well,” he said.

Abiodun praised the pilgrims for their exemplary behaviour throughout their stay in the Holy Land, saying they represented the state well.

He assured that the government would continue to improve support for pilgrims and enhance Hajj operations in future exercises.

The governor also urged the pilgrims to uphold the spiritual lessons learned during the pilgrimage by showing greater humility, obedience to the law, and good conduct in their daily lives.

“I want to charge them to let people see the signs of a transformed person in them—greater humility, obedience to the law, goodness, and conduct that reflect the experience of someone who has just returned from the Holy Land,” he added.

The Consultant to the Governor on Islamic Affairs and leader of the first batch of pilgrims, Sheikh Iskeel Lawal Sugar, thanked Governor Abiodun for his support and consistent concern for the welfare of the pilgrims.

“I want to appreciate our Governor for his efforts in Hajj affairs. He was constantly calling to check on us in Mecca. He is a good leader,” he said.

Two returning pilgrims, Alhaji Ayomide Adetunji and Alhaja Tawa Balogun, also expressed gratitude to God for a safe and successful pilgrimage, while commending the governor for providing adequate welfare and support during their stay in Saudi Arabia.

They described the pilgrimage as a rewarding experience and praised the state government for ensuring a smooth and well-organised process, noting that their direct arrival at the Gateway International Airport was both convenient and historic.
