Safety concerns mount in Jalingo over exposed electrical infrastructure

Residents around the Nukkai Market area in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, have raised serious concerns over what they described as a dangerous electrical hazard caused by a low-hanging power line suspended at an unsafe height in a populated area where children often play.

Eyewitnesses who spoke on Saturday morning said the development has created panic within the Jalingo community after a sagging electrical wire was discovered hanging dangerously close to the ground.

According to residents, the wire is located directly above an open space frequently used by children, sparking fears of possible electrocution or other fatal accidents if urgent action is not taken.

They explained that some children narrowly avoided contact with the exposed wire while playing in the area, an incident that immediately caused alarm among parents, traders, and passersby.

The location of the wire within a busy commercial and residential area has further heightened concerns due to the constant movement of people around the Nukkai Market axis.

A trader identified as Fatimat Allen described the situation as worrisome and appealed for immediate intervention to avert a possible tragedy.

“We are calling on the YEDC to act quickly to prevent any accident that could result in serious damage or loss of lives,” she said.

Other residents also expressed similar concerns, urging the relevant electricity distribution company to urgently inspect the infrastructure and carry out necessary repairs before the situation leads to disaster.

The Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) has been called upon by residents to urgently intervene by fixing or securing the affected pole and electrical wiring.

Community members, including Sunday Ada, Jamilu Kabiru, and engineer Sanda Kole, stressed that while electricity infrastructure is important for development and daily living, safety standards must not be ignored, especially in densely populated areas where children are at greater risk.

They noted that the situation requires immediate technical assessment and corrective measures to prevent avoidable injuries or loss of lives.

Meanwhile, residents said they have continued to monitor the area closely while hoping for swift intervention to restore safety around the Nukkai Market axis.
