Ruger pauses music career amid legal battle with ex-girlfriend

Nigerian singer Ruger’s record label has explained the reason behind his temporary break from music.

In a statement, the label disclosed that the “Bounce” crooner has been away from the music scene due to a legal dispute involving a former partner.

According to the statement, the ex-girlfriend reportedly filed a lawsuit against the singer, alleging “emotional distress” and “damages.”

The statement read in part: “Ruger was caught up in a series of personal challenges after someone he dated decided to sue him for alleged emotional distress and damages.”

It further added that the singer is expected to return to the music scene in August.

BACKSTORY…

Ruger, whose real name is Michael Adebayo Olayinka, is a Nigerian Afrobeats singer who rose to fame in 2021 after signing with Jonzing World, the label owned by D’Prince under Mavin Records affiliation at the time. He gained massive popularity with hits like “Bounce” and “Dior,” which established him as one of the fast-rising stars in the Afrobeats scene.

Over time, Ruger built a strong fanbase and became known for his distinctive eye patch, energetic stage performances, and fusion of Afrobeats, dancehall, and pop sounds.

However, like many fast-rising artistes, his career has also attracted public attention beyond music, including controversies and personal matters. The recent report about a legal dispute with an ex-girlfriend has therefore drawn significant interest from fans and media, especially because it appears to have affected his public appearances and music activity.

The label’s announcement of a temporary break has sparked conversations online, as fans await clarity and his eventual return to the music scene.
