“Mercy Chinwo turned it into a concert” — Daddy Freeze explains why he left Alex Ekubo’s service of songs

Veteran Nigerian media personality Daddy Freeze has explained why he walked out of the service of songs for late actor Alex Ekubo.

Speaking during an Instagram Live session over the weekend, Daddy Freeze said he left the event after gospel singer Mercy Chinwo allegedly turned the atmosphere into what he described as a concert.

The service of songs for the late actor was held in Lagos last Wednesday and was attended by several prominent figures, including gospel musicians, pastors, Nollywood stars, and other celebrities.

According to Daddy Freeze, funeral gatherings should maintain a calm and reflective atmosphere with softer music.

“Mercy Chinwo climbed the pulpit and turned the place into a concert. At that point, I got up and left. Does Mercy Chinwo not have soft music?” he said.

He questioned the type of music performed during the event, insisting that hymns or softer songs would have been more appropriate for a funeral setting.

Other gospel artistes who performed at the ceremony included Peterson Okopi, Moses Bliss, Ebuka Songs, and the Laud Urban Choir.

BACKSTORY…

The comments by Daddy Freeze come amid ongoing reactions surrounding the service of songs held for late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo in Lagos.

The event drew several celebrities, gospel singers, pastors, and members of the entertainment industry, with performances from popular gospel artistes forming a major part of the ceremony.

However, discussions on social media intensified after Daddy Freeze and his wife faced criticism over their choice of black outfits at the event despite the white dress code stated on the invitation.

The media personality later defended his actions, explaining that he viewed the occasion as a solemn mourning event and did not notice the dress code details beforehand.

His latest remarks about the musical performances have further sparked debate online, with some agreeing that funeral events should maintain a more reflective atmosphere, while others defended the style of worship and celebration held during the service of songs.
