BREAKING: Tinubu Nominates Controversial FUOYE VC Abayomi Fashina for Ambassador Role

The Nigerian political space is abuzz today after President Bola Tinubu officially sent the name of Professor Abayomi Sunday Fashina to the Nigerian Senate for the nomination of a non-career ambassador/high commissioner-designate, which is a major diplomatic role.

During the plenary session on Wednesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced this nomination by reading out a letter from the President requesting the upper chamber to quickly confirm Fashina as a non-career ambassador or high commissioner designate.

In the official letter to the lawmakers, Tinubu leaned on constitutional backing to make the pitch, asking the Senate to move fast on the screening.

The president’s letter read, “In accordance with the provisions of section 121, subsections 2, 3, and 4 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the nomination of Professor Abayomi Sunday Fashina as non-career ambassador or high commissioner designate.

“Whilst I hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee expeditiously, please accept, distinguished Senate President and distinguished senators, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

The Backstory: Who is Professor Abayomi Fashina?

Professor Abayomi Fashina is a name that commands attention, often trailing both solid achievements and intense drama. He is currently serving as the vice chancellor of the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE). Fashina’s climb to the top and his tenure have been anything but quiet.

Before taking the wheel at FUOYE in early 2021, Fashina was a dedicated professor of Soil Science. He served as the deputy vice chancellor under the previous administration, positioning himself as a major player in the institution’s growth.

His time as vice chancellor has been a rollercoaster. He has faced fierce battles with local chapters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), alongside petitions over alleged double salary collection and appointment irregularities during his transition into the VC role.

Despite the heavy friction and legal threats from critics, Fashina has fiercely defended his record, pointing to rapid infrastructural development and expanded course accreditation at FUOYE under his watch.

Fashina is widely regarded as a deeply connected academic with strong ties to influential political circles, especially within the ruling All Progressives Congress in the Southwest.

Placing a sitting, high-profile vice chancellor into a diplomatic slot shows that Tinubu is looking to reward loyalty and deploy seasoned administrators to represent Nigeria on the global stage. If the Senate clears him, Fashina will be trading the chaotic politics of Nigerian universities for the polished, high-stakes world of international diplomacy.

NaijaEyesBlog will be monitoring the Senate screening closely to see how the lawmakers grill the controversial professor. Stay tuned!
