Lagos State Government gives street traders 72-hour deadline to vacate illegal trading spots

The Lagos State Taskforce has issued a 72-hour notice to street traders and illegal occupants along the Alaba Rago axis of the Mile 2–Badagry Expressway, ahead of an enforcement operation aimed at restoring order and sanitation in the area.

The directive was announced on Wednesday by the Chairman of the Taskforce, Adetayo Akerele.

Akerele said the move is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to enforce environmental laws and maintain cleanliness and order across Lagos.

He explained that the Alaba Rago corridor has been plagued by persistent illegal trading and environmental violations, which have attracted complaints from motorists, pedestrians, residents, travellers passing through the Seme border, and environmental stakeholders.

According to him, the planned operation will target makeshift stalls, illegal buildings, mini brothels, plastic waste depots, indiscriminate dumping of refuse, unregulated commercial activities, and other environmental offences in the area.

Akerele stressed that the state could no longer ignore the scale of unlawful activities and environmental hazards in the corridor, noting that such conditions are inconsistent with Lagos’ status as a modern megacity.

He added that the enforcement exercise is necessary to restore order and address the abnormalities in the area.

BACKSTORY…

The latest directive is part of the ongoing crackdown by the Lagos State Government on illegal street trading and environmental violations across major roads and public spaces in the state.

Over the years, authorities have repeatedly carried out enforcement operations to remove roadside traders, makeshift structures, and other unauthorised activities blamed for traffic congestion, poor sanitation, and safety concerns. Areas along major transport corridors, including the Mile 2–Badagry Expressway, have remained hotspots for such activities despite previous warnings.

The Alaba Rago axis, in particular, has long faced concerns over overcrowding, waste disposal issues, and the expansion of informal businesses. The fresh 72-hour notice signals another attempt by the state to restore order and improve the environmental outlook of one of Lagos’ busiest commercial routes.
