2027: Nigerian Youth Organisation urges Bola Tinubu to caution Francis Nwifuru over alleged threats to opposition parties

Nigerian Youth Organisation (NYO), a coalition of youth groups, has called on President Bola Tinubu and security agencies to caution Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru over what it described as threats against opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the group’s Deputy National President, Nasir Doka, urged security agencies to pay close attention to what he called the governor’s “inflammatory rhetoric” directed at political actors in the state, particularly members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the South-East.

Doka warned that such comments could pose a threat to democratic stability, stressing that public office holders must be mindful of the weight of their words and the responsibilities attached to leadership.

According to him, Governor Nwifuru’s remarks have sparked concerns among Nigerians, especially young people, who believe the language could be seen as intimidating and contrary to the principles of democratic engagement.

The NYO said democracy thrives on tolerance, criticism, opposition, and the free exchange of ideas, warning that political intimidation could weaken those values.

The group also emphasised that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, association, and political participation, describing them as rights that cannot be taken away by any government official.

It added that any statement capable of creating fear among critics or opposition members deserves serious attention.

The organisation called on the governor to publicly reaffirm his commitment to political tolerance, freedom of expression, and the constitutional rights of all citizens regardless of political affiliation.

It also urged security agencies to remain alert and ensure that no political rhetoric is interpreted as approval for harassment, intimidation, or violence, while calling on Nigerians, especially youths in Ebonyi State, to remain calm and committed to peace.

BACKSTORY…

The call comes amid rising political tension ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, as parties begin early alignments and opposition activities intensify across different states.

In Ebonyi State, political rivalry between the ruling All Progressives Congress and opposition groups, especially the Peoples Democratic Party, has continued to shape the state’s political atmosphere.

Recent comments attributed to Governor Francis Nwifuru have sparked criticism from youth groups and political observers, who fear such rhetoric could heighten tensions and discourage political participation.

Against this backdrop, the intervention by the Nigerian Youth Organisation reflects growing concerns over the need to protect democratic freedoms, political tolerance, and peaceful engagement as the 2027 elections draw closer.
