Femi Gbajabiamila says Bola Tinubu’s administration may review N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers

Femi Gbajabiamila has disclosed that the Federal Government is considering a review of workers’ salaries.

Speaking on Thursday in Abuja at an event organised by Working People United, Gbajabiamila said the N70,000 minimum wage approved by the administration of Bola Tinubu in 2024 may no longer reflect the current economic realities in the country.

He noted that the wage, which was considered a major step at the time, now needs to be reassessed in light of rising costs and changing economic conditions.

Gbajabiamila assured workers that when the process of reviewing the national minimum wage begins, the government will engage labour unions as partners rather than opponents.

He stressed that President Tinubu remains committed to ensuring Nigerian workers receive fair and reasonable wages, adding that good governance thrives on cooperation between government and citizens.

He also urged organised labour to continue embracing dialogue and partnership with the government instead of confrontation, saying collaboration has always produced better results.

BACKSTORY:

The planned review follows the approval of the N70,000 national minimum wage by the administration of Bola Tinubu in 2024 after negotiations with organised labour.

At the time, the increase was seen as a major relief for workers amid rising living costs and economic reforms, including fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate adjustments.

However, persistent inflation and the increasing cost of goods and services have sparked fresh calls for another wage review, with labour unions insisting that the current amount is no longer sufficient to meet workers’ needs.

The latest remarks by Femi Gbajabiamila suggest the Federal Government may soon reopen discussions on adjusting the wage to better reflect current economic realities.
