Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo convened with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso the NDC 2027 vice presidential candidate for a high-level meeting in Kano on Thursday.
Emerging from the private session, sources have described the high-stakes dialogue between the two influential political figures as “constructive discussions.”
Kwankwaso’s media aide Saifullahi Hassan , disclosed this in a post on Friday, adding the meeting took place during Obasanjo’s official visit to the state.
According to details provided by Hassan, Kwankwaso arrived with a high-profile entourage that included Aminu Gwarzo, the former deputy governor of Kano State. Further signaling the strategic nature of the gathering, Gwarzo also holds the banner as the NDC’s official governorship candidate for the upcoming 2027 election.

Hassan wrote, “His Excellency, Sen. @KwankwasoRM, PhD, FNSE, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the NDC, last night paid a courtesy visit to elder statesman and former President of Nigeria, His Excellency Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, at his temporary residence in Kano.”
“Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is currently in Kano on an official assignment, and the visit provided an opportunity for warm exchanges and constructive discussions.”
Meanwhile, Obasanjo has been an ally of Peter Obi, the NDC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
Recall that the former head of state supported Obi ahead of the 2023 presidential election, claiming he had an advantage against Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate.
Kwankwaso Reveals Political Pact With Peter Obi
In an interview with BBC Hausa, Kwankwaso disclosed that many APC members are disillusioned, and might work for the success of other opposition parties from the inside.

He also said that he and Peter Obi have many similar principles, one of which is the overwhelming support they receive, particularly from young people who genuinely think that if they succeed, they will also profit.
Speaking further, the NDC chieftain addressed criticism over his statement before the 2023 election that “the position of vice president was largely ceremonial”.
He said, “any issues have been discussed. When the ticket was unveiled, Peter Obi himself publicly stated that he would not leave us idle. There will be responsibilities and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to governance.”
