Nigeria Earns More but Citizens Grow Poorer — Baba-Ahmed

National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has strongly called out the  the President Bola Tinubu led administration, accusing it of implementing major reforms and policies without adequate planning and failing to tackle Nigeria’s critical challenges.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, the PRP chieftain claimed that the Federal Government did not carry out proper assessments before embarking on key economic reforms, especially the removal of fuel subsidy.

Baba-Ahmed strongly asserted that leadership must never rush into major policy decisions. Instead, he argued that any sweeping government action must stem from a rigorous, upfront analysis of its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.

He said, “You don’t embark on policies without SWOT analysis. The very day President Tinubu was sworn in, by his own admission, the issue about removing subsidy was not even in his speech”

Speaking further, Baba-Ahmed stressed that the administration failed to adequately prepare Nigerians for the consequences of the subsidy removal policy.

“No government undertakes a policy measure of this magnitude without putting it through the most basic elements of a SWOT analysis.”

He argued that despite increased government revenues, ordinary Nigerians have continued to experience worsening economic conditions.

“Now we’re here. Nigeria is making so much money, and yet poverty levels are rising, insecurity is rising and corruption is rising,” Baba-Ahmed alleged.

The PRP chairman flatly rejected allegations that opposition forces were plotting to overthrow the administration through unconstitutional means. Reaffirming his unyielding commitment to democratic norms, he firmly insisted that any transition of political power must occur exclusively through the ballot box.

Tinubu admits harsh reality as Nigerians struggle

Baba-Ahmed’s claims comes only weeks after Tinubu acknowledged that many Nigerians are still grappling with economic hardship and persistent security concerns across the country.

Mr. President disclosed this while accepting the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket for the 2027 general election.

Speaking on the nation’s economic situation, Tinubu admitted the difficulties citizens are facing, particularly rising prices and ongoing economic adjustments.

“However, there are still challenges ahead. Many Nigerians continue to face difficulties with rising prices and changes in the economy.

‘Tinubu Took the Bullet’ on Economic Reforms — Shettima

However, despite the growing and prevalent hardship, the presidency continues to defend its economic reforms.

Vice President Kashim Shettima recently applauded President Bola Tinubu for taking tough decisions over the country’s economic state and reforms.

Shettima said Nigeria’s ambition of building a one-trillion-dollar economy is driven by enterprise, investment and coordinated reforms across all levels of government.

He said, “The President has taken the bullet by making painful decisions because we understand that we cannot build the economy of our dreams on illusions, and leadership requires difficult choices.”
