Nigeria Democratic Congress crisis: Eze Chikamnayo accuses Bola Ahmed Tinubu of targeted attack on opposition

A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Eze Chikamnayo, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of orchestrating a deliberate crackdown on opposition parties.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Monday, Eze Chikamnayo described last week’s Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja, which nullified the registration of the NDC, as troubling and dangerous.

He appealed to President Tinubu to stay away from opposition parties and allow democracy to function without interference.

According to him, ensuring a peaceful political process requires allowing democratic competition to thrive.

“If peaceful change is made impossible, violent change could become inevitable,” he warned.

His remarks come after a Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, overturned its earlier judgment that had directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to register the NDC as a political party.

BACKSTORY:

The latest allegations from Eze Chikamnayo come after a Federal High Court in Lokoja overturned its earlier ruling that had directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress as a political party.

The court decision has sparked concern among opposition figures, who view it as part of a broader pattern of legal and political pressure on emerging opposition platforms ahead of the 2027 elections.

With growing coalition talks and increasing criticism of the ruling All Progressives Congress, the NDC and other opposition groups fear that attempts to weaken their participation could intensify political tensions in the lead-up to the polls.
