‘Free Omoyele Sowore now’ — protesters besiege Federal High Court in Abuja over detention [VIDEO]

A group of Nigerian youths on Tuesday stormed the Federal High Court in Abuja to demand the immediate release of Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress.

The protesters gathered at the court premises ahead of Sowore’s scheduled court proceedings, chanting solidarity songs and calling for his freedom.

Recall that the court had earlier ordered Sowore’s remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

The court had fixed June 30, 2026, to rule on Sowore’s application seeking the restoration of his bail and the reversal of a bench warrant previously issued against him.

Justice Mohammed Umar adjourned the case after both parties adopted their legal processes.

During the protest, demonstrators were heard chanting, “Free Sowore now, we want a better Nigeria,” while urging security operatives at the court entrance to support the cause for a better future for the country.

BACKSTORY:

Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has long been known for his activism and outspoken criticism of government policies. Over the years, Sowore has faced several legal battles tied to protests, political activism, and public comments against authorities.

His latest court case stems from allegations that led to the issuance of a bench warrant and his subsequent remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre. This development sparked reactions from his supporters, many of whom view the charges as politically motivated and an attempt to silence opposition voices.

The protest at the Federal High Court in Abuja reflects growing frustration among some Nigerian youths who see Sowore as a symbol of resistance against bad governance and a voice for accountability. Today’s court ruling on his bail application is being closely watched, as it could determine whether he regains his freedom while the case continues.
