Gunmen Strike NIPSS Again, One Assailant Neutralised

Security operatives at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies(NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State, on Wednesday night repelled another attack by suspected gunmen, killing one of the assailants during a gun battle.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency analyst covering the Lake Chad region, the June 29 operation also disrupted the movement of militants operating in the area.

Zagazola reported that the military launched the operation after receiving credible intelligence that more than 200 terrorists were travelling on motorcycles along the Sangeko–Dogon Dawa–Womba axis.

The statement said security operatives responded swiftly and in a coordinated manner, forcing the attackers to retreat after an exchange of gunfire.

It added that security personnel killed one of the attackers during the gun battle, while several others escaped with varying degrees of injuries.

The statement read, “The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, wishes to inform the public that another attempt by unidentified armed assailants to breach the Institute’s security perimeter was successfully repelled by security personnel late yesterday night, Wednesday, 1 July 2026.

“The attackers engaged security operatives in a gun duel but were forced to retreat following the swift and coordinated response of the security forces. One of the assailants was neutralised during the encounter, while others were reported to have escaped with varying degrees of injuries.

“The Institute is pleased to report that there was no breach of the security perimeter. All participants, staff, residents and Institute facilities remain safe and secure.

“Security agencies have intensified efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects, while surveillance and other proactive security measures have been further strengthened within and around the Institute.”

Backstory…

The latest attack underscores growing security concerns around the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, following a similar incident reported just days earlier.

During the previous attack, gunmen reportedly attempted to breach the institution’s perimeter, but security personnel repelled the assault, raising fresh concerns about the vulnerability of critical national assets.

The renewed assault comes amid a resurgence of armed attacks across parts of Plateau and neighbouring states, where criminal gangs and bandits have increasingly targeted communities, highways and government facilities.
