Convicted Ex-Minister, Saleh Mamman Loses More Multi-Billion Naira Assets to FG

A former Minister of Power, Alhaji Saleh Mamman who is serving a 75-year jail term for embezzling N22 billion, has forfeited a major Abuja property in upscale Wuse District.

An interim forfeiture order was granted against four other assets.

Five further assets connected to Alhaji Saleh Mamman, 68, who served from 1999 to 2021, were ordered to be forfeited by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The order was issued yesterday by Justice James Omotosho in response to an application submitted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The forfeited assets are; Walijam Apartments at 43, Plot 435, Lobito Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja; Bloom Luxury Suites Nigeria Limited at 5 Amana Crescent, New Estate, Unguwan Rimi, Kaduna State; a mansion at 11 Misratah Street, Wuse 2, Abuja; another mansion at 13 Misratah Street, Wuse 2, Abuja; and A.U.A Plaza at Plot 734 Kade Street, Wuse 2, Abuja.

Additionally, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of Walijam Apartments.

According to him, the EFCC proved during Mamman’s criminal trial that the property was purchased using money obtained through illegal activity.

For the remaining four properties, however, the judge issued an interim forfeiture order. He noted that the EFCC has not yet proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Mamman bought them or had a stake in them.

Backstory…

The federal high court in Abuja previously sentenced ex- minister of power, Saleh Mamman to 75 years in prison over corruption related to the hydroelectric power projects in Mambilla and Zungeru.

The sentence was given by Justice James Omotosho. Mamman was convicted on all 12 counts preferred against him by the EFCC.

Mamman was found guilty on 12 counts by the trial judge, who also decided that the sentences would be served consecutively, totalling 75 years in jail.

In July 2024, the EFCC arraigned Mamman on a 12-count charge that included allegations of money laundering and conspiracy with ministry officials and certain private companies to “indirectly convert” the sum of N33.8 billion intended for the Zungeru and Mambilla hydroelectric power projects.
