Lagos State Fire Service Launches Investigation into Apapa Tank Farm Fire

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has launched an investigation into the fire outbreak at the Bono Energy Terminal located in the Coconut area of Apapa.

The agency’s spokesperson, Shakiru Amodu, had earlier confirmed the incident in a statement released on Friday.

Providing an update, the Controller General of the service, Margaret Adeseye, revealed that the fire was brought under control at about 2 p.m.

According to Adeseye, the incident involved a five-million-litre Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) storage tank that caught fire around noon.

She explained that emergency responders were quickly dispatched after receiving a distress call, noting that their swift intervention prevented the situation from escalating and that no casualties were recorded.

Adeseye stated that the fire occurred at a storage tank within the Bono Energy Terminal, located inside the Ibru Jetty Complex along the Apapa–Oworonshoki Expressway near Coconut Bus Stop in Olodi Apapa.

She said the emergency was reported at approximately 12:04 p.m. on Friday, July 3, 2026, and firefighters from the Ajegunle, Sari Iganmu, and Isolo fire stations arrived at the scene by 12:16 p.m.

The LSFRS boss noted that the collaborative efforts of firefighters and emergency teams from nearby oil and gas facilities helped contain and fully extinguish the blaze by 1:54 p.m.

She stressed that the prompt response prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining storage tanks and other vital infrastructure within the terminal, averting what could have turned into a major industrial disaster.

Adeseye added that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.

The incident occurred just hours after another emergency involving a leaking Liquefied Petroleum Gas tanker at Owode Elede inward Onirin along Ikorodu Road.

Earlier, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency confirmed that the gas tanker developed a mechanical fault in the early hours of Friday, but emergency responders were able to contain the situation without any casualty.

BACKSTORY:

The fire incident at the Bono Energy Terminal has renewed concerns over safety compliance and emergency preparedness in Lagos’ oil and gas sector, particularly within the Apapa industrial corridor, which houses several tank farms and petroleum storage facilities. Over the years, the area has witnessed multiple fire outbreaks and industrial accidents due to the concentration of flammable products and heavy truck activity. The latest incident also comes amid heightened vigilance by emergency agencies following a separate gas tanker leak along Ikorodu Road earlier the same day, underscoring the growing risks associated with fuel transportation and storage in the state.
