Following an exchange of gunfire between the two sides, US President Donald Trump declared on Wednesday that the ceasefire with Iran is “over,” though he indicated that negotiators could continue discussions with Tehran.
Trump denounced Iran as “scum” and “cuckoo” after Washington launched overnight strikes on the Islamic Republic, which followed claims by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards that they had targeted US bases in the Gulf.
Global oil prices surged by 5% immediately following the president’s remarks. At a global NATO summit in the Turkish capital Ankara, Trump said, “I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them any more, they’re scum.”
“They’re scum, they’re sick people, they’re led by sick people, and they’re vicious, violent people. And if they had a nuclear weapon, they’d use it.
“As far as I’m concerned, it’s over.”

Trump stated he would consult with businessman-turned-negotiator Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner—both of whom have been engaging with Iranian officials—but maintained that Tehran must return to the negotiating table.
According to a report by Dawn, the president also alleged that the Iranians had repeatedly misrepresented the terms of the truce signed between Washington and Tehran on June 17.
“Everyone’s agreed, no nuclear weapon. We make a deal. They go outside, joke to the press, they say we never even talked about it. There’s something wrong with them, they’re cuckoo,” Trump added.
Rutte fully backed the overnight American strikes on the Islamic Republic, telling reporters, “I think what you did last night was absolutely necessary. It was a very strong response, and I’m with you on this”.
