Tinubu’s Most Unlikely Ally: The Ezenwo Nyesom Wike Story

In Nigerian politics, power often comes with an expiry date. Governors leave office, ministers are reshuffled, party leaders lose influence and yesterday’s political giants quickly become yesterday’s news. However, one man, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has defied that pattern.

More than two years after leaving Government House in Port Harcourt, Wike remains one of the most influential politicians in Nigeria. His voice continues to shape conversations within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), his political structure still dominates Rivers State, and despite belonging to an opposition party, he occupies one of the most strategic positions in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

While many supporters describe him as bold, fearless and results-driven. Several others describe him as domineering and politically ruthless, power drunk or even cruel.

Regardless of these contrasting perspectives or the side of the debate one belongs to, one thing remains constant: Wike has become a political phenomenon. Although it is difficult to ascertain if this is positively or negatively.

The G5 Rebellion That Grossly Impacted PDP

Wike’s national influence reached unprecedented levels during the build-up to the 2023 general elections.

As governor of Rivers State, he led the now-famous G5 Governors—a group comprising Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Seyi Makinde (Oyo).

Following Atiku Abubakar’s emergence as the PDP presidential candidate, they insisted that the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, should resign to restore the North-South balance within the party.

When their demand was ignored, Wike transformed what appeared to be an internal disagreement into one of the biggest rebellions in the PDP’s history.

The G5 refused to support Atiku’s presidential ambition, and although they never officially endorsed Bola Tinubu as a group, Wike openly praised the APC candidate and maintained close political contacts with him throughout the campaign.

Leaving Rivers Without Leaving Power

Most former governors gradually lose political relevance after leaving office. But Wike’s case appears to be the opposite.

His political structure remains deeply rooted across Rivers State, with many local government chairmen, assembly lawmakers, party executives and political appointees still answering to him.

The crisis between Ezenwo Nyesom Wike and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, demonstrated just how much political capital the former governor still commands.

What began as a mere disagreement over control of the state’s political machinery evolved into a full political crisis, leading to the defection of lawmakers, impeachment threats, court battles, parallel political structures and eventually the declaration of a state of emergency by President Tinubu.

Even after Tinubu’s intervention, Wike continues to command significant loyalty within Rivers politics.

Tinubu’s Most Unlikely Ally

Despite remaining a PDP member, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike accepted his appointment as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), becoming one of the highest-profile opposition politicians to serve in an APC-led government.

An appointment that surprised many Nigerians. For years, Wike had been one of the APC’s fiercest critics.

However, today, he is arguably one of the Tinubu administration’s most visible ministers.

From demolishing illegal structures to accelerating road construction and embarking on ambitious urban renewal projects, Wike has remained constantly in the headlines.

His supporters argue that performance should matter more than party affiliation. His critics on the other hand say he has plans waiting to fully materialise.

The Man Who Still Shapes the PDP

Ironically, Wike’s influence within the PDP appears to have survived even after aligning himself with an APC government.

Virtually every major PDP decision—from leadership contests to zoning debates, candidate choices and coalition negotiations—still attracts questions about Wike’s position.

His loyalists continue to occupy strategic positions within the party, while many governors and party stakeholders still consider his support politically relevant.

The Ezenwo Nyesom Wike Phenomenon

Whether history ultimately judges Nyesom Wike kindly or harshly, his impact on contemporary Nigerian politics is already very visible.

The former Rivers State Governor helped reshape the PDP through the G5 rebellion. He continues to exert influence over Rivers politics long after leaving office.

The FCT minister has become one of President Tinubu’s most trusted cabinet members despite remaining in the opposition.

And he remains one of the few politicians capable of dominating conversations in multiple political camps simultaneously.
