Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz, a former adult film actress, has been sworn in as a senator in Colombia.

Also known as Amaranta Hank, Ortiz won the seat in the March election after campaigning for stronger rights and protections for workers in the adult entertainment industry.

She will represent Colombia’s Norte de Santander region as a member of the Historic Pact for the 2026–2030 legislative term, securing the 23rd position on the coalition’s closed-list ballot.

According to information gathered from Colombia’s National Registry, the Historic Pact has established itself as the nation’s leading political power. The coalition secured 25 Senate seats after capturing 22.72 percent of the vote, which translates to over 4.4 million ballots.

Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz said her past career should not define or undermine her work as a legislator, despite her transition from journalism to the adult film industry before entering politics.

According to Infobae Colombia, she argued that women who have worked in the sex industry contribute significantly to the country’s economy and deserve legal recognition and protection rather than continued stigma and discrimination.

Omaña Ortiz, who was born in Cúcuta, said she plans to focus her legislative agenda on mental health and the prevention of sexual abuse during her time in the Senate.

Her rise stands out as a focal point in recent Colombian political coverage. It follows the intense pushback within President Gustavo Petro’s administration just months earlier, when her appointment as deputy minister in the Ministry of Equality—alongside former fellow actor Juan Carlos Florián—triggered widespread debate across the cabinet.

Backstory…

The swearing-in of a former adult film actress as a senator reflects a broader trend in Colombian politics, where public figures from outside traditional political circles have increasingly entered public office.

Over the years, several entertainers have successfully made the transition into politics. Singer and actor Jorge Enrique Abello, television presenter Mabel Lara, and football icon Carlos Valderrama have all ventured into political or public service roles, while many journalists and media personalities have also sought elective office, capitalising on their public recognition and large followings.
