The vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to reassure Nigerians that the 2027 general election will be conducted on a level playing field for all political parties.
Amaechi made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he reacted to President Tinubu’s recent statement that “all is fair in politics” during a meeting with the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).
The Amaechi Tinubu 2027 election comments centred on the need for the President to publicly assure Nigerians that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the ADC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and other political parties would compete in a free, fair, and transparent election.
According to Amaechi, Tinubu should have used the opportunity to calm public concerns by affirming his commitment to a credible electoral process rather than making comments that could be interpreted differently.
“Look at the President’s statement that all is fair in politics. If a thug takes a gun and shoots me where I’m voting, is that fair?” Amaechi asked.
He argued that the President’s remarks should be open to public interpretation, stressing that citizens have the right to assess statements made by political leaders.
“I just listened to him now. You know that I read literature. The moment a writer concludes his writing, any other comment he makes is interpretation. He has the right to interpret his book; I have the right to interpret his book,” he said.
Amaechi maintained that, in response to concerns raised by the Catholic Church over the credibility of future elections, Tinubu should have reassured Nigerians that all political parties would contest under equal conditions.
“When the Catholic Church is crying about the possibility of having an election that may not be fair, all the President needs to do is reassure the country that APC, PDP, and ADC will slug it out on an even field, that it will be a free and fair election. Let the best team win,” he added.
The Amaechi Tinubu 2027 election comments come as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum, with opposition parties increasingly scrutinising the actions and statements of the Tinubu administration.
