AI4Africa Sets Sights on Training 2 Million Africans in Artificial Intelligence by 2030

AI4Africa has set an ambitious target to equip 2 million Africans with artificial intelligence knowledge by 2030, in a move aimed at widening access to AI education and helping more people across the continent participate in the rapidly changing digital economy.

The initiative is built around a simple but increasingly important idea: artificial intelligence should not remain a technology reserved for software developers, researchers or people with access to expensive training. For millions of Africans, especially young people and those outside major technology hubs, understanding how to use AI could increasingly influence their education, employment and ability to build businesses.

The 2 million target was highlighted by Adeola Eka, founder of DiGiTechForce Academy and an advocate for expanding AI education across Africa. She described AI4Africa as an effort to equip Africans with AI knowledge and create broader access to opportunities emerging from the technology.

The ambition comes at a time when AI adoption is accelerating globally, and African countries are attempting to ensure that their populations are not left behind. Rather than focusing only on advanced technical skills, AI4AFRICA’s approach includes practical applications that ordinary users can understand and apply.

Why AI Education Matters for Africa

AI4AFRICA says its education model is designed for people who may have little or no technical background. Its programmes focus on practical applications in learning, work, entrepreneurship and everyday problem-solving. That is where the value of mass AI education becomes clearer. The objective is not necessarily to turn 2 million people into AI engineers. It is to give more Africans enough knowledge to understand the technology, use it productively and recognise its limitations.

AI4AFRICA also places emphasis on responsible AI use, including awareness of misinformation, bias and critical thinking.

The initiative’s model goes beyond a single classroom experience. For a continent with a huge and growing young population, this type of model is worth watching. Access to technology alone does not automatically create opportunity. People need the skills to understand what the technology can do and how to apply it to problems around them.
