The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has authorised its branches in 20 universities to issue 14-day ultimatums to their respective managements over the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government and the union.
The decision was taken at ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Abuja on Saturday and Sunday, August 8 and 9, 2026.
According to resolutions signed by the union’s President, Christopher Piwuna, NEC expressed concern over what it described as the inconsistent implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement.
The union also faulted the Federal Government for failing to release the necessary subvention to enable the full implementation of the agreement.
ASUU further criticised visitors to several state-owned universities that have yet to implement the agreement.
Consequently, NEC approved requests from branches seeking permission to commence procedures for industrial action, subject to the issuance of a 14-day ultimatum.
The affected institutions are Nasarawa State University, Keffi; Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai; University of Medical Sciences, Ondo; Gombe State University; Plateau State University, Bokkos; Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba; Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma; Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa; Abia State University, Uturu; and University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Akamkpa.
Others are Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo; Kaduna State University; Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil; Northwest University Kano; Enugu State University of Science and Technology; Imo State University, Owerri; Niger Delta University; University of Africa, Toru-Orua; Bayelsa Medical University; and Taraba State University, Jalingo.
ASUU directed the affected branches to commence strike action once their respective 14-day ultimatums expire if their demands are not addressed.
The latest move signals renewed tension between the university lecturers’ union and government authorities over the implementation of agreements reached to address longstanding issues affecting Nigeria’s public universities.

The latest development follows ongoing disagreements between ASUU and government authorities over the implementation of agreements aimed at addressing issues affecting lecturers and public universities.
At its August 8–9, 2026 NEC meeting, the union expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as the haphazard implementation of the 2025 agreement and the failure to release funds required to meet the agreed obligations.
ASUU has now given affected university branches the approval to begin the process of industrial action. The branches are required to issue 14-day ultimatums, after which they are expected to embark on strike if their demands remain unresolved.
