OpenAI has introduced a dedicated ChatGPT for Teens experience for users aged 13 to 17, bringing stronger safety protections, parental controls and education-focused features to one of the world’s most widely used artificial intelligence platforms.

The move, announced on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, comes as AI becomes increasingly common in the daily lives of young people, particularly for schoolwork, research, writing and learning. OpenAI says nearly nine in 10 teenage ChatGPT users use the platform for learning, obtaining information, building skills or productivity during a typical week.

The new experience is designed to allow teenagers to benefit from AI while reducing exposure to content that may be inappropriate or harmful to their age group.

ChatGPT for Teens Adds Stronger Safety Protections

Under the new system, ChatGPT can automatically provide a more age-appropriate experience when OpenAI’s systems estimate that an account belongs to someone under 18. The company says it uses age-related information and behavioural signals, while adults who are incorrectly placed in the teen experience can use age verification to request removal of the restrictions.

Teen users receive additional safeguards around subjects including graphic violence, self-harm, dangerous viral challenges, unhealthy body-image content, and sexual, romantic or violent roleplay. The system is also designed to discourage teenagers from treating ChatGPT as a human relationship or emotional substitute.

OpenAI is also introducing stronger digital wellbeing measures. Teenagers who spend extended periods using ChatGPT can receive reminders to take breaks, encouraging healthier technology habits instead of prolonged use.

For parents, the update provides more control without turning ChatGPT into a surveillance tool. Once a parent or guardian links their account to a teenager’s account, they can manage selected features, including voice mode, image generation, memory and other settings. They can also establish Quiet Hours, during which the teen cannot use ChatGPT.

Importantly, OpenAI says parental controls do not allow parents to read their children’s conversations or monitor their chats in real time. Safety notifications may be sent in limited circumstances where systems and trained reviewers identify serious concerns, such as possible self-harm.

Learning Takes Centre Stage as AI Enters the Classroom

Beyond safety, OpenAI is positioning the teen experience as an educational tool rather than simply a faster way of getting homework answers.

A major component is Study Mode, which guides students through problems using questions, explanations and opportunities to reflect instead of immediately providing a final answer. OpenAI says the feature was developed with teachers, learning scientists and education specialists.

Teenagers can use ChatGPT to break difficult topics into smaller steps, turn notes into study guides, create flashcards and practice questions, and review evidence and clarity in their work.

The company has also expanded interactive mathematics and science experiences. According to OpenAI, 18 million people now engage with these interactive learning experiences each week, with more than 300 topics available across areas such as biology, mathematics and physical science.

This approach could be particularly relevant to students in countries such as Nigeria, where access to personalised academic support can vary significantly between schools and communities. Used properly, AI can provide students with another avenue for explanations and practice outside the classroom. However, the technology still requires guidance because an AI-generated answer can be confidently wrong.
