Nigerians Can Now Access Free AI and High-Paying Tech Skills Through New Training Opportunities

Nigerians looking to build a career in technology have several new opportunities to learn artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, software development and other digital skills without paying the usual training fees.

The opportunities come from government-backed programmes, international organisations and Nigerian technology foundations, giving students, graduates, job seekers and career changers more ways to acquire skills that can improve their chances in the digital economy.

One of the biggest opportunities is Nigeria’s Digital Training Academy (DTA), a Federal Government initiative being delivered with Coursera. According to the official DTA platform, the programme is targeting 36,000 Nigerians with free learning licences covering more than 10 skill areas. These include AI and machine learning, software development, cloud technologies, cybersecurity and IT automation.

The programme is particularly significant because participants are not simply being offered random online tutorials. The government says learners can access courses from global experts through Coursera and receive certificates after completing their training.

The DTA also says training centres with internet access and learning devices are being established, an important development for Nigerians who may not have reliable personal computers or internet access at home.

Other free programmes Nigerians should know about

The Digital Training Academy is not the only route available.

The Federal Government’s 3 Million Technical Talent programme, known as 3MTT, continues to provide pathways into areas including AI and machine learning, data science, software development, cybersecurity, cloud computing, data analysis, UI/UX design and DevOps. The official 3MTT platform says its second phase is expected to train 270,000 technical talents through three cohorts.

For people who already have basic or intermediate knowledge of artificial intelligence or data science, the 3MTT DeepTech Ready Upskilling Programme provides a more advanced option. The Federal Ministry of Youth Development describes the programme as offering free advanced training in AI and data science, practical projects, certification and career placement support. Applicants from all 36 states and the FCT are eligible, subject to the programme’s requirements.

Another opportunity is Passport to Earning, a UNICEF initiative supported by Microsoft and implemented with government and local partners. The platform provides free digital, productivity, employability and generative AI learning. UNICEF’s official information confirms that Passport to Earning is designed to provide young people with job-relevant skills at no cost.

The programme is already producing practical outcomes. UNICEF recently profiled young Nigerians who used the platform to learn AI-powered creative tools, including digital art, animation and content creation.

The growing number of free technology programmes comes at a time when employers increasingly need workers who can use digital tools effectively.

For many Nigerians, however, the cost of quality training remains a major barrier. That is why programmes that remove tuition fees can make a meaningful difference.

There are also private and nonprofit initiatives adding to the opportunities. The Tech Diversity Foundation, for example, says its lessons are free and currently offers a Digital Literacy and AI track covering basic digital tools, AI fundamentals and learning skills. Its programme structure also provides pathways towards areas such as data, frontend development, backend development, cybersecurity and AI automation.

The wider picture is clear: learning technology is becoming less about having a computer science degree and more about developing useful, demonstrable skills.

What Nigerians should do with the opportunity

Free training should not be treated as a shortcut to instant income. Completing an AI course alone will not automatically lead to a high-paying job.

The real advantage comes from combining training with practice.

Someone learning AI, for instance, can build small projects, create an AI-assisted business workflow, develop a portfolio, analyse datasets or help a small business automate repetitive tasks. A person studying cybersecurity can build practical labs, while someone learning software development can publish working projects on GitHub.

This is where many learners miss the point. The certificate may help open a door, but proof of what you can actually do is what can help keep that door open.

Nigerians interested in these programmes should therefore check eligibility requirements carefully, register through official platforms and avoid paying anyone who claims they can guarantee admission into a government-sponsored programme.

For people who have been postponing a move into technology because of the cost of training, the current opportunities offer a practical starting point. The challenge now is not simply finding a free course. It is choosing one useful skill, completing the training and turning that knowledge into something employers, clients, or businesses can see and value.
