MTN Targets Nigeria for AI Data Centres as Africa Enters a New Computing Era

MTN Group is putting Nigeria at the centre of its next major digital infrastructure push as the telecommunications company moves deeper into artificial intelligence, cloud computing and data centres across Africa.

The group has identified Nigeria and South Africa as the first priority markets for its AI-enabled data centre strategy, according to its half-year 2026 results released on August 24, 2026. The announcement comes as demand for computing power continues to rise across the continent, driven by artificial intelligence, cloud services, enterprise technology and growing digital consumption.

For Nigeria, the development could be significant. The country already has one of Africa’s largest digital markets, and additional high-capacity computing infrastructure could support businesses and technology companies that increasingly depend on data processing, cloud platforms and AI tools.

MTN’s move also shows how the African telecom industry is changing. Operators are no longer focused only on connecting people to the internet. They are increasingly looking at the infrastructure behind the digital services Africans use every day.

MTN establishes new company for Africa’s AI infrastructure

MTN said it has established Africa Data Hub Holding Limited following a strategic partnership with an undisclosed data centre investment platform backed by investors in the United Arab Emirates.

According to the group, the partnership is intended to accelerate its data centre ambitions as demand for AI, cloud computing and enterprise digital services increases across African markets. The new structure is expected to support the development and expansion of an AI-enabled data centre platform on the continent.

MTN, however, has not disclosed the identity of the UAE-backed investment platform. It has also not announced the amount of capital committed, the planned power capacity or specific locations for the first facilities.

That leaves several important questions unanswered, particularly for Nigeria. While the country has been named as an initial priority market, MTN has yet to publicly provide a construction timeline or identify the Nigerian cities that could host the proposed infrastructure.

Still, the creation of a dedicated holding company suggests the project has moved beyond an early discussion and into a more structured phase.

Why Nigeria matters in MTN’s AI data centre strategy

Nigeria offers MTN a combination of market size, digital demand and an established telecommunications footprint.

MTN Group reported 317.7 million customers across its markets at the end of June 2026, while active data subscribers increased by 9.1 percent to 179.3 million. Data traffic also climbed 22.8 percent to 14.3 petabytes during the first half of the year.

Those figures help explain why computing infrastructure is becoming strategically important. As more Nigerians use smartphones, online financial services, streaming platforms, cloud applications and AI-powered products, the infrastructure required to process and store that data must grow alongside demand.

There is also increasing competition to build large-scale data infrastructure in Nigeria. Airtel Nigeria, for example, has been linked to plans for a 38MW hyperscale data centre in Lagos, highlighting the growing commercial interest in the Nigerian data centre market.

MTN’s advantage could come from its existing network, fibre infrastructure and relationships with businesses and consumers. If the company succeeds in combining its telecommunications footprint with local computing capacity, it could become an important player in the infrastructure supporting Nigeria’s emerging AI economy.

Back story: MTN has been preparing for the AI era

This latest announcement is not MTN’s first move into AI-related infrastructure.

The company’s Digital Infrastructure business had already been laying the groundwork for an expanded AI-enabled data centre rollout, with MTN saying earlier that it saw an opportunity to benefit from growing demand for cloud, enterprise and AI services across Africa.

MTN has also been exploring distributed computing. Earlier reports indicated that its broader AI strategy could involve using parts of its African network footprint as locations for computing workloads closer to end users, potentially creating an edge computing network for AI inference.

The timing is important. Africa’s AI ambitions cannot depend entirely on computing infrastructure located outside the continent. Data centres require reliable electricity, connectivity, cooling systems, cybersecurity and substantial investment, all of which will influence how quickly African countries can build competitive AI ecosystems.

For Nigeria, MTN’s announcement therefore represents more than a new telecom investment. It could become part of a wider shift towards building the physical infrastructure needed for artificial intelligence locally.

The next major developments to watch will be the location, capacity, investment size and construction timetable for MTN’s Nigerian AI data centre projects. For now, Nigeria has secured a place at the front of MTN’s African computing ambitions.
