Nigeria Challenges Universities to Turn Research Into Businesses, Jobs and Commercial Innovations

Nigeria is stepping up its push to make university research more commercially useful, with the Federal Government challenging universities and the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, NASENI, to turn academic discoveries into businesses, jobs and products that can solve real problems.

The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, made the call as the government intensified efforts to close the gap between research institutions and the marketplace.

Alausa said universities must move beyond producing research papers and prototypes to creating innovations capable of generating economic value. According to TVC News, the minister wants a stronger relationship between universities, NASENI, investors and industry so that promising research can progress from the laboratory to commercial production.

The move is part of a wider effort to position research and innovation as tools for economic development, rather than activities that end when an academic project is completed.

A major part of the Federal Government’s proposal is for NASENI to work more closely with universities located around its development centres.

Alausa said NASENI could help provide the missing connection between academic discoveries and commercial success by supporting patent registration, connecting researchers to venture capital and helping universities establish spin-off companies. The Abuja Inquirer reported that the minister also encouraged the agency to explore opportunities in lithium processing and battery manufacturing.

The focus is significant for Nigeria as the country looks to develop more domestic capacity in critical minerals, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.

Rather than leaving researchers to navigate commercialisation alone, the proposed model would bring together researchers, technology developers, investors and manufacturers.

That could give Nigerian universities a clearer route to protect intellectual property, develop prototypes, attract investment and ultimately produce goods and services for the Nigerian and international markets.

The minister’s position also reflects the government’s wider ambition of building an economy where knowledge and innovation contribute directly to national productivity.

Research commercialisation could create a new path for Nigerian innovation

The government believes the commercialisation of university research can help create new businesses and employment while reducing the distance between Nigeria’s academic community and its industrial sector.

For years, Nigerian universities have produced research across science, engineering, medicine, agriculture and other disciplines. However, many discoveries have struggled to progress beyond academic publications, conferences or laboratory prototypes.

The new approach seeks to change that pattern by encouraging institutions to think about the commercial potential of research from an earlier stage.

NASENI is expected to be important in this process because of its mandate around science, engineering, technology development and industrialisation. The agency can potentially help researchers move from proof of concept to prototyping, manufacturing and market entry.

The Federal Government’s broader economic target is also part of the conversation. Blueprint reported that the minister linked the commercialisation drive to Nigeria’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy.

For universities, that means research success could increasingly be measured not only by publications and citations, but also by patents, companies, products, jobs and measurable social impact.

The latest directive is not an isolated policy announcement. In January 2026, the Federal Government unveiled its National Research-to-Commercialisation Policy and established structures intended to move publicly funded research towards market-ready solutions.

The Federal Ministry of Education said the initiative would strengthen the relationship between government, universities, research institutions, industry and investors. It also announced financial support, including a ₦2 billion provision in the 2026 budget for the Research, Innovation and Commercialisation Committee, alongside a ₦50 million Student Grant Venture Capital Initiative for student-led enterprises and institutional innovation grants. The Federal Ministry of Education said the measures were designed to support the development of market-ready solutions.

The latest call to universities and NASENI therefore represents another step in that policy direction.

The bigger question is whether Nigeria can build an ecosystem where a good idea developed inside a university can secure intellectual property protection, funding, technical support, manufacturing capacity and access to customers.

If the system works, university research could become a stronger engine for Nigerian entrepreneurship, technology development and employment. It could also encourage researchers and students to view innovation not simply as an academic requirement, but as an opportunity to build companies and solve problems at scale.

For Nigeria, the real measure of success will ultimately be what happens after the research is published: whether an idea becomes a product, whether a prototype becomes a business and whether innovation creates jobs that improve people’s lives.
