Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election, a coalition of six opposition parties has proposed forming a “government of national competence” to serve a single four-year transitional term.
The proposal emerged on Monday at a G100-organised meeting of opposition political parties in Abuja.
Representatives of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP) attended the summit.
According to Salihu Lukman, a former North-West Vice-Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the proposed government would rest on four key pillars: competence, integrity, national inclusion and fair representation.
Additionally, the coalition also proposed an enforceable transition charter to ensure that participating parties abide by the agreement.
Under the proposed structure, the coalition would establish a central leadership committee, publicity and communication committee, and legal committee to coordinate its activities and oversee the implementation of the agreement.
The coalition also plans to establish working committees focused on national reforms, opposition unity, democratic renewal, the single-term transition charter and the selection of a common presidential candidate.
However, Lukman said the initiative does not require any political party to dissolve or any candidate to withdraw from the 2027 race.
He explained that the coalition’s immediate priority is to create a framework for cooperation before addressing questions about candidates and leadership.
Lukman also said G100 was supporting the process without backing any political party or candidate.
He said the broader goal was to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative government in the 2027 elections.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, the proposal comes amid increasing political activity and efforts by opposition groups to build a stronger challenge to the ruling party.
