NFFF appoints Augustine Eguavoen Super Falcons head coach

JUST IN NFF Names Augustine Eguavoen Interim Super Falcons Coach Ahead of Olympic Qualifiers

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially appointed former Super Eagles manager Augustine “Cerezo” Eguavoen as the interim head coach of the senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, for their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying fixtures against Comoros in October..

The appointment follows the Nigeria Football Federation’s dismissal of Justin Madugu and his technical team last month.

The Nigeria Football Federation said in a statement on Tuesday that Eguavoen’s appointment is temporary. The search for a permanent coach for the senior women’s national team remains ongoing.

“Former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen will lead Nigeria’s Senior Women’s National Team, the Super Falcons, on an interim basis for their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying fixtures against Comoros in October, as the search for a substantive head coach for the team continues,” the statement read.

Days after Nigeria’s disappointing performance at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and subsequent failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the NFF ordered Madugu and his technical team to resign on August 17.

The Falcons entered the WAFCON as defending champions but lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the quarterfinals. They then suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the World Cup qualification play-off.

The defeat ended Nigeria’s record of appearing at every Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991.

With the Olympic qualifying campaign approaching, the NFF has turned to Eguavoen as a temporary replacement for Madugu.

Augustine Eguavoen

Augustine Eguavoen, commonly known as “Cerezo,” will be assisted by Nasarawa Amazons head coach Christopher Danjuma, with former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa serving as goalkeeper trainer for the team.

Eguavoen previously managed Nigeria at the senior international level, guiding the Super Eagles to a bronze medal finish at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The Super Falcons are scheduled to face Comoros in a two-legged fixture on October 9 and October 13 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, Nigeria.

While Nigeria received a first-round bye into the second round as one of the top-ranked teams in the qualification campaign, Comoros secured their spot by defeating Sudan 30–0 on aggregate.

To secure one of Africa’s two slots at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the Super Falcons must win four rounds of two-legged knockout ties.

If Nigeria defeats Comoros, the Falcons will face either Morocco or the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the third round, scheduled for February 23 to March 6, 2027.

The fourth round will take place from October 4 to 12, 2027, while the final round is scheduled for November 23 to December 4, 2027.

Additionally, Former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf has also joined the team as an assistant coach.
