2027 Presidency: Turaki-Led PDP Rejects Tinubu’s Re-election Bid

The Taminu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that it will not support President Bola Tinubu’s reelection bid in the 2027 presidency.

The group conveyed its stance through a statement that its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, issued on Tuesday.

Addressing reports that Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was dismantling his political network to back Tinubu’s second-term ambition in the 2027 presidency, the PDP faction noted that such developments were hardly surprising.

Here is the active voice version:

The party emphasized that the minister aimed his statement at those who, like himself, pose as opposition members while advancing the interests of the governing party, rather than true PDP members.

The statement reads, “The PDP will never support the re-election of President Tinubu. The true and principled members of the PDP are not part of the shameless, self-serving support for the APC-led Federal Government and its destructive policies.

“The paramount duty of the opposition is to provide an alternative to the incumbent, not to massage their ego. If at all, opposition parties are to have an alliance, it will be amongst themselves, not with the governing party.

“This political anomaly, styled and championed as a ‘rainbow coalition,’ is the greatest threat to electoral democracy and the fastest way of railroading the country into an electoral monarchy.

“We urge all true and faithful members of the Peoples Democratic Party to remain steadfast as we await the judiciary’s decision, hopeful that it will return our party to its true owners.

“Our case at the Court of Appeal has been heard, and we await judgement. We know that the entire judiciary is conscious that justice delayed is justice denied”, it also added.

Backstory…

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains locked in an internal power struggle, as opposing factions contend for control of the party following sharp disagreements over its future course and political alignments leading up to the 2027 presidency.

This conflict pits supporters of the faction led by Taminu Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), against the camp aligned with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The ongoing rift has cast doubt on the party’s internal cohesion and its capacity to field a cohesive opposition front in the upcoming presidential race.

Meanwhile, the latest friction stems from Wike’s reiterated stance that he intends to back President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, maintaining that politicians can rally around the President for the top office while still running for other elective positions under their own party platforms.
