Ongoing France protests worsens as French police deployed tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrators in Paris and several other cities as violent clashes broke out toward the end of a day of nationwide rallies.
In the capital’s Porte de Vincennes area, individuals in the crowd hurled projectiles toward police late Saturday, while rioters set barricades ablaze in Marseille and tore wooden boards from a storefront in Bordeaux.
Officials confirmed that law enforcement officers executed nearly 1,000 arrests throughout the day as an estimated 410,000 citizens demonstrated across France. Trade unions, however, estimated total nationwide turnout at approximately 800,000 participants.
Officials have so far prevented a repeat of last weekend’s rioting and looting, which produced some of the worst chaos in France’s modern history.
After a peaceful march from the city’s Porte d’Italie toward Porte de Vincennes on Saturday, clashes erupted between demonstrators and riot police as night fell. Authorities deployed an elite unit—typically reserved for organized crime and counterterrorism—to reinforce the police operation.

Paris Police Prefect Laurent Nuñez stated that a deployment of 70,000 security personnel will draw from local forces, elite police units, and mobile gendarmes across the nation.
Earlier this week, President Emmanuel Macron ordered authorities to permit only demonstrations organized by recognized labor unions. Following expedited judicial proceedings over recent days, French courts have sentenced hundreds of individuals to prison terms for destruction, arson, and looting.
