UNICAL SUG President Blessing Alims appoints 50 aides.
Blessing Alims, the first female Student Union Government (SUG) President of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), has appointed 50 aides. This move, confirmed in a letter dated August 1, 2024, and signed by Alims, has sparked mixed reactions among netizens.
Alims, who was elected on June 14, 2024, is currently studying Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution at the Department of Political Science with a CGPA of 4.75. She hails from Gakem, Bekwarra LGA, Cross River State, and in 2022, she won a contest organized by the Youngers Foundation Female and More Social Impact Project, leading to a 10-day learning visit to Kigali, Rwanda.
Reactions to her appointment of 50 aides have varied. Some argue it mirrors the larger Nigerian society’s political practices, reflecting a potential lack of resource management skills. For instance, Moses AZ commented that a university is a reflection of the larger society, implying that Alims is following existing precedents. Similarly, @Yagba humorously noted that the appointees likely include figures resembling prominent Nigerian political personalities.
Others criticized the move, suggesting it exemplifies inefficiency and reliance on excessive support, akin to practices seen in Nigerian politics. Quincy Savalake remarked that this behavior mirrors national political tendencies, where officials often have multiple assistants. Damilare Odulesi criticized Alims for seemingly lacking independent thinking, while @diara_sund5497 found it absurd for such a small office to require so many aides.
Despite the criticism, some defended Alims, suggesting she might be testing a politics of involvement, which emphasizes active participation and engagement in governance. For instance, @featswaggs09 proposed that Alims might be experimenting with inclusive political practices within her institution.
Overall, the development has sparked a lively debate, reflecting various perspectives on governance and resource management within both university settings and broader political contexts.
