Abuja Building Collapse Kills 5, Leaves 10 More Injured

A three-story structure under construction in Abuja, Durumi 3 neighbourhood, close to Gudu market, fell on Saturday morning, leaving at least five reported dead.

Lere Olayinka, a spokesman for Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, provided an update on the morning’s incident, stating in a statement that ten more individuals were injured.

However, he disclosed that one person was rescued alive. The victims were believed to be construction workers on site when the building came down.

He said, “Rescue operations still ongoing as emergency responders continued efforts to evacuate more victims believed to be trapped beneath the rubble at the construction site located around Gaduwa Estate in the Gudu district.”

“Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, who was at the scene, said the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has directed that all casualties be given free medical treatment.”

Meanwhile, in a previous announcement, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) stated that 12 people were injured and that four people had perished in the collapsed building.

NEMA reported that shortly after the incident, it received a distress alarm and quickly sent out rescue teams to conduct search and rescue operations.

It also added that  the casualties have so far been evacuated to Asokoro General Hospital for treatment.
