Members of the David Mark-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) staged a protest at the Federal High Court in Abuja, calling on the judiciary not to be used to undermine opposition parties in Nigeria.
The protest comes amid an ongoing legal dispute between the David Mark-led faction of the ADC and another group headed by Nafiu Bala.
The demonstrators alleged that the lawsuit filed by Bala—which was returned to the Federal High Court by the Supreme Court—is aimed at distracting the opposition party.
It was recalled that in April, the Supreme Court nullified an order of the Court of Appeal in Abuja that directed all parties to maintain the status quo ante bellum in the party’s leadership dispute, a ruling which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) relied on to withdraw recognition from the David Mark-led faction.
In a unanimous judgment delivered by a five-member panel, the Supreme Court directed all parties to return to the Federal High Court for an accelerated hearing of the case filed by aggrieved party member Nafiu Bala.
