Africa Needs Mass AI Skills Programmes to Build the Workforce of Tomorrow

Artificial intelligence is moving from being a subject discussed mainly by technology experts to becoming a skill that could determine who gets opportunities in the global economy.

India is already showing what large-scale technology training can look like. Through Samsung Innovation Campus, about 20,000 students were trained across India in 2025 in areas including artificial intelligence, coding and programming, Internet of Things and Big Data. The programme expanded to 10 states, representing a significant increase from the 3,500 students reached the previous year.

By June 2026, Samsung said 30 top-performing students had emerged from the 20,000 participants and were recognised for their performance across AI, coding, IoT and Big Data. The students came from 10 states, showing that technology training is increasingly reaching beyond India’s major technology centres.

For Africa, the lesson is not simply that young people should learn artificial intelligence. The bigger lesson is that AI education needs to be organised at scale.

Why Africa Cannot Afford to Treat AI Training as a Small Initiative

Africa has one of the world’s youngest populations, and that presents both an opportunity and a responsibility.

Millions of young Africans are entering the education system and labour market at a time when AI is changing how businesses operate, how services are delivered and how professionals perform everyday tasks.

Yet access to digital education remains uneven. The International Telecommunication Union estimates that around 60 per cent of young people in Africa remain unconnected, limiting their ability to participate fully in the digital economy.

This means AI training cannot be designed only for students in elite universities or young people who already have access to expensive devices and reliable internet.

Africa needs programmes that deliberately reach public schools, universities, technical colleges, underserved communities and young people who may never consider themselves technology professionals.

The objective should also go beyond teaching people how to use AI tools. Young Africans need to understand data, coding, machine learning, digital ethics, automation and how AI can be applied to African problems.

For Nigeria, this could have enormous implications. A young person who learns AI alongside agriculture, healthcare, education, finance or manufacturing can potentially become more than a technology user. That person can become a problem solver.

Back Story: Africa Is Already Beginning to Build AI Skills

The idea of a large-scale African AI skills programme is not entirely new.

Nigeria launched the DeepTech_Ready Upskilling Programme with the ambition of training 20,000 young people in AI and data science. The initiative, involving the 3 Million Technical Talent programme, Data Science Nigeria and Google, was designed to combine learning, practical projects and job readiness.

More recently, the International Telecommunication Union, with support from Google and the I Am Angel Foundation, launched an AI and Robotics Youth Training Programme across Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.

That programme aims to reach more than 20,000 students and train 1,000 teachers. It also uses AI clubs, teacher training and robotics challenges to introduce young people aged 10 to 18 to practical technology skills.

These programmes are important because they point towards the kind of model Africa needs. Training teachers creates a multiplier effect. Instead of teaching a limited number of young people directly, trained educators can continue passing those skills to new groups of students.

Africa Needs Scale, Local Solutions and a Clear Path to Jobs

The biggest question is no longer whether African young people should learn AI. It is whether governments, technology companies, schools and development organisations can build systems capable of reaching millions of them.

India’s experience demonstrates the value of combining industry expertise, education institutions and national skills priorities. Samsung’s programme, for example, works across several states and combines technical education with employability-focused training.

Africa can develop its own version, but it should not simply copy India.

An African AI skills programme should be built around local realities. In Nigeria, training could connect AI with agriculture, public administration, education, healthcare, financial services and small businesses. In Kenya, Ghana, South Africa and other countries, programmes could be adapted to their own economic priorities.

Most importantly, training should not end with a certificate.

Young people need opportunities to build projects, solve real problems, access mentorship and connect with employers. Universities and technical institutions should also work more closely with technology companies so that what students learn reflects the skills businesses actually need.

Africa has no shortage of young people with ambition. What is needed is a deliberate system for turning that ambition into capability.

The AI race is already underway. If Africa waits until artificial intelligence has completely transformed the workplace before investing heavily in skills, the continent may find itself consuming technologies designed elsewhere without having enough people capable of building, adapting and governing them.

The opportunity is still here.

But Africa must move from scattered AI training initiatives to sustained, accessible and continent-wide skills development.
