Agbedi: Police blockade of PDP convention is an attack on Nigeria’s democracy

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus leader in the House of Representatives, Fred Agbedi, has criticised the Nigeria Police over the reported blockade of the party’s convention venue, describing the action as an assault on democracy.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Sunday, Agbedi said the police action amounted to restricting lawful political activity and undermining democratic principles.

It was reported that police operatives on Saturday allegedly blocked access roads leading to the venue where the faction led by Taminu Turaki planned to ratify former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate.

Reacting to the development, Agbedi said the security operatives shut down the entire route, denied citizens access, and prevented the PDP from using a legally secured venue for its convention.

He added that despite the situation, party leaders, members, and supporters remained resolute to ensure the event was not disrupted.

According to him, such actions are a worrying trend in a democracy, warning that any attempt to limit legitimate political engagement threatens free and fair participation.

Agbedi urged Nigerians to stay alert and continue to defend democratic space and constitutional rights.
